Description Presenting Symptom: Cotton wool spots. Pathology: Retinopathy. Clinical: White spots lie superficially in the retina as indicated by the fact they obscure the vessels. In this case, vascular engorgement can be seen in the small vessels between the disc and the macula but no hemorrhage or abnormality of the larger vessels is seen. The "collagen group" of diseases is suspected when the cotton wool spots are sufficiently abundant to form a dominant feature of the retinopathy. The patient was an 8-year old male with dermatomyositis. Disease/ Diagnosis: Dermatomyositis
