Description Presenting Symptom: Congenital cataract; Splotchy retinal pigmentation. Pathology: Cataract OD; Stippled retinal pigment OS. Clinical: Pigmentary retinal lesions (and cataracts) are found frequently in children whose mothers had rubella during the first trimester of pregnancy. A characteristic lesion is splotchy pigmentation of the retina, sometimes described as salt-and-pepper appearance. The patient was a 10-year old female who had a congenital cataract in the right eye and pigment stippling of the central area in the left eye. The history of maternal rubella was equivocal.
