Description Presenting Symptom: Perifoveal deposit of sphingomyelinase OU. Pathology: Perifoveal lipid deposit. Clinical: Nieman-Pick Disease is characterized by accumulation of sphingomyelin in various tissues. It may also involve the retina and brain. The adult variety, however, affects predominantly the viscera. It is much less common and less homogeneous than Tay-Sachs disease. The present case is an unusual manifestation in which a perifoveal deposit was present in both eyes. The patient was a 24-year old female who had hepatosplenomegaly. A therapeutic splenectomy provided tissue which proved to be loaded with sphingomyelin. Disease/ Diagnosis: Niemann-Pick Disease
