Optic Neuropathies

Update item information
Identifier 96_57
Title Optic Neuropathies
Subject Optic Neuropathy with Retinopathies
Description This healthy 29-year-old man with dense amblyopia OS presented with a foreign-body sensation OS and further visual loss in his amblyopic eye. He was noted to have bilateral disc edema and lesions in the left eye consistent with unilateral acute multifocal placoid pigment epitheliopathy (AMPPE). He refused lumbar puncture, and the remainder of his systemic workup was negative. He recovered to his baseline amblyopic function over a few months and has been well for 10 years. The unilateral retinal disease in conjunction with bilateral disc edema supports the conclusion that AMPPE is a manifestation of a systemic disorder. Pair with 96_53, 96_54, 96_55, 96_56, and 96_58.
