Title AJ Eardley 1935 Diary
Description Geology Prof. Armand Eardley (1901-1972) accompanied Frederica De Laguna on the archaeological expedition to Alaska in the summer of 1935. At that time, he was a professor at University of Michigan, before finishing his career at University of Utah (my institution), where he was also a dean. This was a documented archaeological expedition of the Lower Yukon led by Frederica De Laguna. The trip also included ethnologist Norman Reynolds. This album relates to the published article "An archaeological reconnaissance of the middle and lower Yukon Valley, Alaska" by Frederica De Laguna, American Antiquity v. 2 no. 1, p. 6-12. Dr. De Laguna was influential for her work on Alaska Native American Art, and some of her interests are clearly noted in the diary. After his photos were developed from the trip, he laid out the sequential photos and cruise ship memorabilia, interspersed with the appropriate sections from his daily diary. Being a scientist, Eardley gave a fascinating and detailed account of his trip, and recounts the natural history (with some sketches) as well as stories and interactions with the natives.
