Re-visioning the east end of 9-Line Trail, Salt Lake City, Utah: A comfortable and safe shared-use path design.

The original goal of the 9-Line Master plan is to link the east and west sides of Salt Lake City, Utah, with a system of urban trails. According to the plan, the 9-Line Trail will be constructed as a shared-use path, completely separated from the traffic. In the most recent 9-Line Extension Study, planners propose an expansion towards the east end of the trail that takes natural land from "This Is The Place Heritage Park" located near Sunnyside Avenue. This extension will interrupt park's native landscape bringing engineering complexities while dealing with a degree of geographic slope. This professional project investigates if there is an alternate way that does not interrupt park's natural landscape and minimize construction complexities. At the same time, the project explores if the alternate route can provide a lower slope. With these aims, the project tries to uphold the original goal of the 9-Line Master Plan while extending it further to the east.
