Using Web-Based Street View to Measure Urban Design Qualities in Salt Lake City, Utah

Urban Planners and designers acknowledge the importance of perceptual qualities to active street life but have had very few reasonable evidences to support the acknowledgement. Recent research has established measurement protocols for Urban Design Qualities related to walkability and successfully measured five Urban Design Qualities in terms of physical features of streets: Imageability, Enclosure, Human scale, Transparency, and Complexity. This study attempts to measure the same qualities of the urban street environment with a new method of using ‘web-based Street View' in Downtown Salt Lake City, Utah.
