||Through the combination of inquisitive mark-making and active painting techniques, my work lives as a visual record of the excitement and emotions I feel when I'm making art. While at the moment of creation, notations reflecting on the experience of painting coexist, while speaking different visual languages. The work contains literal, visual, as well as codified vernacular, as a way to express the thrill of exploration in various forms. Marks and scratched notes created while in the process of painting serve for many purposes. There are media notes referencing the types of materials and techniques involved creating different aesthetic effects and can be reused to replicate in future paintings. Symbols and text represent the immediate emotional response as a way to reflect on what was just created, and whether or not to engage in painting edits. Personal triumphs and uncertainties are represented across the surface through means of edits, invention, marks of acceptance, and alternative solutions. The editing process curtails any emotive hinderance or aesthetic shortcoming, whether it be by codified text, or visual cues such as an x, a slash, or painted field. Oil painting is the primary component throughout the work. However, preliminary sketches are done in oil pastel, crayon, markers, pencil, charcoal and airbrush. Actively painting while being aware of immediate thoughts of objects, interactions and changes evolve into a self-dialogue of both visual and textual. This dialogue acts as a narrative of change amidst the act of creative intuition. Large brushstrokes interact with urgent edits and abbreviated notes, ultimately questioning the pieces unfinished quality, the weight of the idea, marker of time and influence, and personal discovery.
