The problem of this thesis was to choreograph a modern dance concert using dancers of four experience levels. By experience level, I refer to maturity and dance training of the dancers and their ability to cope with the dance themes. I used the premise that, whenever possible, it was wise to choose dance ideas that the dancers had personally experienced. "Greeting" used the idea of meeting, involving movement themes of a hand wave and a bow and was performed by local high school students; "1 Thru 6" consisted of six studies of abstracted children's games, or play, utilizing props and performed by college students; "Encounter" used the idea of rejection and was performed by graduates; and "Women" used the idea of inner turmoil in women caused by some personal loss and was danced by high school dance teachers. This basic problem of choreographic creation was complicated in production by the necessity to integrate musical selection, costumes, and lighting with the total dance expression. The culmination of this process was a concert of four fances presented on May 23, 1968 at East High School. The production was filmed and the film accompanies the written portion of this creative thesis. |
