Title River Nymph, Earth Goddess: a Female Narrative on the Power of Outdoor Adventure Experiences
Date 2018
Description The primary focus of this thesis is to reveal aspects of the female reality in outdoor adventure experiences. An outdoor adventure experience occurs at any time where one is intentionally outside, appreciating nature often through a type of physical activity. My method is intentional introspection and thorough reflection on how outdoor adventure experiences have shaped me. I identify as a female, therefore these ideas add to the discourse of the female reality. My ideas are augmented by several outside sources. With a creative and autoethnographic approach, I turn these introspections and reflections into personal narratives that reveal certain realities of the female in outdoor adventures experiences. My narratives explore questions of confidence, strength, body image, eating disorders, intuition, ability, love, and courage. Through three distinct narratives and an epilogue, I address these questions and leave the drawing of impactful and thought-provoking conclusions to the reader. I withstand the discomfort of vulnerability to speak out on my experiences as a female in the outdoors with the mission to provoke discussion, open eyes, educate my peers, and improve the reality of life for humans across the gender spectrum.
