Title Two of Saariaho's harmonic principles and their influences on formal design and a selection of General Zhang's limericks for baritone, men's choir and chamber orchestra
Date 2018
Description This dissertation contains two parts. Part I is a theoretical study of the harmonic character of Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho's music. In the process of examining 13 of her compositions, two major harmonic principles, the use of a signature set and the use of interval classes 1 and 2, are discussed. In addition, this theoretical study examines the ways in which these harmonic principles affect the formal design in Saariaho's music. Part II, A Selection of General Zhang's Limericks, is an original composition written for baritone, men's choir and chamber orchestra. General Zhang Zongchang (1881-1932) was a military leader at the beginning of the Republic of China, and warlord in Shandong Province in the early 20th century. He wrote many limericks, which are recorded in his Poetry Collection of Xiaokun. In this composition, five of the limericks are set to music. These are among the most representative of his limericks, which are colloquial, vulgar, straightforward, and sometimes meaningless. The music conveys these traits through its highly sarcastic nature.
