Description An effort by Galileo, following his trial on heresy charges for supporting the Copernican view of the solar system, to reconcile Scripture with Copernican thought. It was circulated in manuscript as a letter to the Grand Duchess Christina. The first printed version was published in 1636, the Latin version being by Elia Diodati, under the pseudonym of Roberto Robertini. Galileo used citations from Augustine to argue that nothing would have prevented theologians at the time from accepting the Copernican system, had they rigorously followed their own explicitly formulated principles of interpreting Scripture.
