Description Anticancer therapy administration has shifted from the inpatient to the outpatient setting for a variety of reasons, leading to increased patient comfort, convenience, and allowing patients' wishes to be respected. Although therapies for metastatic solid tumors can be administered safely in an infusion center or via home health services, it is prudent to administer certain anticancer therapies in the inpatient setting for observation due to toxicity risk, patient comorbidities, or the need to treat the cancer immediately. Use of anticancer therapy for metastatic cancer in the inpatient setting may be considered emergent for newly diagnosed chemosensitive disease or for acute medical complications attributable to tumor progression. Treating hospitalized patients with emergent anticancer therapy routinely occurs and forces patients who have a limited life expectancy to spend a significant portion of their time in the hospital. The aim of this study is to characterize the utilization of emergent inpatient anticancer therapy in metastatic solid tumor patients and identify potential adverse outcomes associated with this therapy.
