Description The U of U NBICU does not use consistent screening for iron deficiency in infants who are known to be at risk. There was no consistency in the tests used or timing of the studies for SGA or IDM infants. VLBW infants were consistently screened, but not consistent with timing of tests. IDM, SGA and VLBW infants should be consistently screened for iron deficiency before 14 days of life to aid in decisions regarding iron supplementation. For infants that are iron deficient at birth, it may be beneficial to begin supplemental iron prior to 14 days of age.
