Title Operation Health Baby
Creator Ferrin, Courtney
Subject Women health care; United States
Description As an individual going into a career in the healthcare system, I have put a great deal of thought into the population that I would like to serve. I chose my center of focus to be on women and children. The purpose of my Integrative Service Learning Project was to educate women in the community about resources such as Pregnancy Risk Line and to answer questions they have about medication use in pregnancy. I created a student group through the University of Utah College of Pharmacy to achieve this purpose. Through this student group (Operation Health Baby) I attended health fairs and created OTIS fact sheets for Pregnancy Risk Line. I also made bulletins that were put in newsletters for Married Student Housing. Overall my project was trying to prevent pre-term births in the state of Utah by incorporating Pregnancy Risk Line into a student group. This goal is a current goal of the Utah Bureau of Maternal and Child Health Program under the direction of the Utah Department of Health. Being that it is a current state goal, my goals were in line to have a long-term impact. I learned to have compassion for others and the problems/difficulties that they are facing, how to approach and reach people. I also learned how to give better explanation of health care related topics and act as a member of a health care team.
