Description Optic nerve sheath fenestration is performed to manage papilledema causing progressive loss of vision , due to raised intracranial pressure from Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension or Cerebral Venous Sinus Thrombosis. The procedure is usually performed in cases of severe visual field loss or when medical therapy (Diuretics like Acetazolmide) alone is ineffective in halting progressive loss of vision. The goal of the procedure is to prevent any further loss of vision. In other cases where there is marked headache in a addition to progressive loss of vision, neurosurgical shunt (ventriculoperotneal or lumboperitoneal) are performed.
