Content Description +/-

This collection consists of speeches presented at Baccalaureate and Commencement services of Westminster College, Salt Lake City, Utah. The materials date from 1945 onward.

The speeches include the speaker's name, date presented, and the text of the speech. Some of the documents are the speaker's copy, containing handwritten corrections and notes. Others are widely-distributed printed copies (for example, those of Anthony J. Ostroff (poet, and Vice President of Lewis and Clark College), M. Donald Thomas (Superintendent of Schools, Salt Lake City School District) and W. Homer Turner, Vice President of United States Steel Foundation)). The speeches were usually twenty minutes in length. The most common theme of the speeches emphasizes the importance of education and how to use the knowledge earned. The baccalaureate speeches were usually about religion and life. Many speakers used different themes such as André Michalopoulos, Professor emeritus, the legacy of Greece; Donald Thomas on democracy; and Elmer G. Million on Christian world leadership. Other speeches had themes reflecting the period in which presented.

Only five of all the speakers were women. One was G. Keith Funston (1961), the president of the New York Stock exchange, who spoke about the economic situation in that time. She stated: "My generation should change the worn out concept that profits are unimportant. Russia has made impressive economic gains in recent years, and we must make a more concerned effort if we are to maintain our superiority."

Westminster College began awarding honorary degrees in 1945 to recognize contributions to Westminster College and/or to the greater society. Typically, two to five individuals were given honorary degrees during the spring commencement, and two during the summer commencement. Frequently, one of the honorees was selected to present the commencement or baccalaureate addresses. Neither in 1978, nor in 1982 did any of the honorary degree recipients speak. In 1978, College President Helmut P. Hofmann spoke briefly, analyzing the numbers and majors of the graduates. In 1982, President James E. Petersen spoke during both the baccalaureate and commencement services.

Gaps in the collection: The texts of only 46 percent of the speeches presented from 1945 onward are found in the collection; 54 percent are wanting.
