Westminster College, Salt Lake City, Utah: Westminster College in Salt Lake City, Utah came into official existence as an educational institution when the Board of Trustees approved a name change on Feb. 6, 1902 from the earlier name, Sheldon Jackson College. For a few years, the letterhead on Westminster College stationery included the notation "formerly Sheldon Jackson College". College classes were suspended 1909-1913 but resumed in 1914. Westminster College as a legal entity was closed June 30, 1983 and reopened the next day on July 1, 1983 as "Westminster College of Salt Lake City", technically a new institution. The name was changed back to Westminster College in 1998.

This collection consists of the minutes of the Academic Affairs Committee of the Board of Trustees of Westminster College of Salt Lake City. The minutes date from 1984-1998, during which period the institution was called "Westminster College of Salt Lake City".

The earliest minutes in the collection are dated September 6, 1984, recording the meeting of September 4th. A.A. (Allan A.) Kuusisto issued the typed minutes, listing W. Donald Brumbaugh as chair of the committee. Deans attending included Him Toomey (School of Professional Studies) and Mari Lou Steffen (School of Nursing and Health Science). Jay Nelson, head of the Utah Trade Tech. (Utah Technical College) was invited to join the group. One topic of the meeting was the upcoming October 26 visit of the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges.

The November 5, 1984 meeeting agenda included faculty development policy and awards, the "Manual for Faculty", a report of the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges visit, the impact of the Phoenix Institute on Westminster's mission and enrollment, the new Business Communication major being developed, accreditation, and the possibility of creating a permanent classroom "situation in a southwest Salt Lake City location" for a satellite program. In addition, advertising and recruitment was discussed.

Meeting in 1985, 1986, and 1987 discussed the new "Liberal Education" format and requirements, May term, approval of promotions and new faculty appointments, sabbatical leaves, and retention. With the March 9, 1987 minutes, a new chairman's name appears (Sterling McMurrin).

In the 1991 minutes were issued by Steve Baar, Academic Vice-President, and V. Frobes-Wetzel is listed as Chair of the committee. The last minutes in the collection are dated March 25, 1998.

Gaps in the collection: There are no minutes for the years 1989 and 1990.
