Biographical Note/Historical Note +/-

Westminster College in Salt Lake City, Utah came into official existence as an educational institution when the Board of Trustees approved a name change on Feb. 6, 1902 from the earlier name, Sheldon Jackson College.

In November 1895, a Presbyterian college had been incorporated in Salt Lake City. In 1897 college courses were taught within the Sheldon Jackson College, named after well-known Presbyterian minister, missionary, and primary benefactor. John Eaton, a Civil War general, was named president of the new college. He visited Salt Lake City only once, spending his time fundraising for the college in the Eastern United States.

George Bailey served as the 2nd President of Westminster College from 1901-1905. In 1898, Rev. George Bailey and his family had moved to Salt Lake City where Bailey was pastor of Westminster Presbyterian Church. In 1900 he was named president of Sheldon Jackson College. when Sheldon Jackson, who had pledged $50,000 to the College, was unable to fulfill his commitment, the college obtained funds from William and Jeannette Ferry and changed its name to Westminster College in 1902. As the college continued to struggle to stay solvent, President Bailey later resided in Washington, D.C., where his primary function was fund raising for the college.

Content Description +/-

This collection consists of five issues of the quarterly college publication Westminster herald published between October 1903 and January 1905 by Westminster College, Salt Lake City, Utah. Subtitled "a quarterly bulletin of Westminster College", it was intended for donors, possible donors, and others interested in Christian education. The Herald was mailed to any address for ten cents per year or free to anyone contributing one dollar or more towards the college's work. It contains information on the founders of the college, its name, location, status, origin, and photographs of Westminster College. It also reported on college events including the erection of the college chapel, financial needs, inadequate facilities, and student activities. The Westminster herald appears to be the college's first serialized publication.

Gaps in the collection: While it is unknown how many issues were actually published, the second issue (Vol.1, no. 2) is wanting.
