Content Description +/-

This collection consists of personnel files of college faculty, staff, and trustees. While the types of records included in each file vary, all document the relationship of the subject to the college. Correspondence is the common type of record and status is conveyed; contracts also establish the status of a faculty or staff member, but they can be absent when a letter of correspondence states the individual's active, employed, status.

The collection mainly spans the presidencies of Richard D. Steele (5th President) and J. Richard Palmer (6th President), though some records, such as the Hatfield records, predate this time period. Likewise, a certain correspondence within the Manford A. Shaw file is dated within the Shaw presidency (9th President). The individuals included are staff/faculty members as well as trustees. More specifically, records have been kept on teachers, deans, house mothers, a groundskeeper, members of the board of trustees, etc. Some individuals may incorporate more than one of these titles; for instance Manford A. Shaw's file includes records on him as a trustee as well as the college's president.

In some cases, personnel records will not include any of the above information: certain files exist to provide a single instance of information about an individual. For example, the Lou Rachel Paden (teacher and librarian) records are composed of her memorial from a copy of the Utah Westminster and a personal letter regarding her passing.

Certain records can also contain publications written by or about the represented individual. An example of this is the Melvin H. Day records, which contain a few of the papers he published concerning mosquito abatement in the state of Utah using a certain type of chemical.

The majority of the records are strictly business-related. An exception to this can be found in the Jesse S. Boughton files. These records document the Westminster career of Dean Boughton (9th Dean), and they do not end after the dean resigned from his position.

Arrangement:

The collection is arranged in two series:

  • Series 1. Personnel records (Unrestricted)
  • Series 2. Personnel records (Restricted)

The folders in this collection are arranged in alphabetical order according to the employee's last name; the content within each folder is arranged in chronological order.

Processing Note:

Processed by Josh Ivie. It should be noted that certain records had to be removed and sealed in restricted boxes due to the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Other records were removed due to irrelevance to the series. A number of non-hired individuals were included in this series originally, but have since been removed due to lack of evidence that they had any further relationship with the college.

Out of convenience, photocopies of the Deseret News Magazine feature on Gertrude Teutsch's water color artwork were included in her file. The original record has been included as well in an additional listing in a separate box.
