Biographical Note/Historical Note +/-

In January 1977, Westminster College President Dr. Helmut Hofmann began publishing a bimonthly newsletter entitled The President's bulletin. Publication was continued through the interim presidency of James Petersen, and ceased shortly after the September 1979 inauguration of President C. David Cornell.

Content Description +/-

This collection consists of 43 issues of newsletters published 1977-1980 by presidents of Westminster College, Salt Lake City, Utah. Thirty-nine issues (January 13, 1977 through October 17, 1979) were published under the title President's bulletin and the remaining 4 issues (October 24, 1979 through March 1980) were published under the title President's newsletter.

The bulletins contain brief articles and bits of information concerning current events on campus. While the Bulletin seemed to have been available to everyone, its tone is toward faculty and staff members. It reported on the Board of Trustees' decisions, faculty and staff news, updates from the administration as well as periodical figures and statistics regarding student enrollment. The Bulletin would list outgoing faculty and staff members, in addition to incoming employees, with information about the various projects and endeavors concerning each of the departments of the college. The Bulletin included congratulatory news clips, outstanding praise or specific acknowledgements; special features where frequently contained within the small issues.

The first issue of the President's bulletin is published without explanation. Publication seems to have ended abruptly but may have continued beyond the issues included in this collection. It should be noted that in its brief 3-year existence, the Bulletin was issued less frequently and content became less informative.

Publication began with the January 15, 1977 issue (Volume 1, number 1) and continued regularly throughout the year until December 31, 1977 with a total of 24 issues published that year. The second year of the President's bulletin (Volume 2, number 1) resumed on January 15, 1978 and continued regularly until November 15, 1978 with a total of only 18 issues for that year. Finally, the third year, which does not begin until October 17, 1979 (no issue number), continues until the winter of 1980. No specific date is given on the final issue in the collection (now entitled President's newsletter, but it can be dated to March 1980 from a statement in the content of the newsletter. Since later issues were not numbered it is impossible to know the total number of issues published in 1979-1980. Gaps in the collection and the abrupt end to publication of the newsletter may be explained by the resignation of President Hofmann in January 1979, the interim presidency of Mr. James Peterson during the spring and summer, and the inauguration of a new president, C. David Cornell in September 1979.
