Description The purpose of this action research project was to investigate ways to utilize the SMART Board with a kindergarten English Language Development class at a Title 1 school. The action research project was conducted during the Fall of 2013 during the 45-minute English Language Development period students participate in each day. The projects' goal was to engage students and improve learning outcomes by incorporating technology in the classroom. Class discussions were used to discover students' background knowledge and assess English language usage in order to design English language development objectives and link curriculum to their current funds of knowledge. Students participated in a focus group discussion to identify their views of the SMART Board and background with technology. Students were assessed individually to further determine which ELD objectives to focus on when planning lessons. SMART Board notebooks were created to organize units of study and incorporate music, visuals, video, interactive games, student work samples and charts. The results of the action research project indicated that the SMART Board is an effective tool in engaging students and enhancing learning. The results of the project also revealed that a teacher's ability to be flexible with the curriculum is essential for meeting the needs of students.
