Title The Development of a Virtual Database and an Evaluation of Techniques to Improve the Performance of a Virtual Database
Date 1992-03
Description This project evaluated the practicality of the virtual database and the effectiveness of the performance enhancement techniques. The overhead associated with the virtual database was negligible for interactive applications. The additional delays for sequential queries may be negated because the entire archive may be available on line; therefore, queries ultimately will require less time to complete. It was shown that prefetching data that are likely to be needed improves the performance of the virtual database. The virtual database is one tool that may effectively expand the storage of a database system such as HELP.
