Clearly, if one is intent on modeling meshes of points, then this hierarchal approach is unsatisfactory. Accurate descriptions of physical motion also concern those who represent the motion of rigid bodies. Dynamics, a program written at the University of Utah by Todd Elvins[5], represents the interactions between the motion of spheres by modeling the transfer of rotational and linear forces due to collisions between the spheres. UniverÂsity [7] are extending this area of research by developing a modeling system that represents the motion of arbitrarily shaped bodies. 2.2 Deformable Models A typical representation of a deformable surface uses a grid of points where the points are allowed to move in relation to one another. How the points are allowed to move determines the properties of the deformable surface. For example, to get the effect of an elastic surface, the grid points are connected by springs. When the set of points is subjected to external forces it stretches and bounces in a manner similar to a real elastic surface. Note that the term \"deformable surface\" has a different meaning than a surface upon which are performed \"deformation operations.\" For a deformable surface, the model has intrinsic properties independent of any operations that are to be performed on it. In the case of the elastic surface just described, the intrinsic property is that of a spring force relationship between points. By contrast, a deformation operation is one that takes a set of points and moves them in some manner, such as a warp or a bend operation, regardless of any relationship the points are said to have. Only recently have models been presented to deal exclusively with representing and manipulating deformable surfaces.
