This would also speed the form factor calculations. Different ray distributions could be used for different material characteristics. This might provide a more flexible approach that would match real behaviors more closely. An adaptive surface subdivision radiosity solution is an important feature. If an adaptive solution is to be implemented, it would be beneficial to use a surface subdivision tessellation which can easily be decomposed into self-similar units. The adaptive subdivision should also provide easy access to adjacency information for efficient interpolation performance. The n2 storage for form factors is a problem. For example, with 2000 triangles, and four bytes per form factor, form factor storage required 16 million bytes. An efficient compression scheme for these values would be useful, especially in light of the fact that the form factor values are used in the algorithm in one or three rows at a time. If a surface can be considered to have almost no diffuse reflection characteristics, then it should be elirrunated from the matrix solution. This could effect large savings, trimming the value of n in the algorithm that is O(n2 ) for matrix solution and form factor storage. The search for the most efficient ray intersection method continues.
