Description The treatment of a patient with a pituitary adenoma is dependent on the type of tumor, the effect of the tumor on vision and other features of a mass effect, and on pituitary function. With the exception of a prolactin producing adenoma, the first line of treatment for most patients is surgical removal of as much of the lesion as possible. Despite the ability to remove an adenoma completely or to debulk the lesion significantly, many patients require adjunctive medical treatment and, in some instances, pituitary radiation to control the disease.
