Shifting values and evolving technology have aided the creation of new courtship methods such as "hookup culture." Nevertheless, the traditional dating script still remains prominent in contemporary society. This study examines the social factors surrounding the traditional dating script and the more recent hookup culture. It asks how the traditional dating script has remained prominent in contemporary society and debates whether the traditional dating script is still advantageous for today's contemporary society. To address these questions, I utilize a mixed-method study that includes an ideological criticism of courtship portrayals in American advertising, a survey of attitudes related to linguistically-gendered power dynamics, and an analysis of the social characteristics of dating technology. Through this analysis, I argue that the traditional dating script is so deeply ingrained in America's social structure that it can never be fully removed; however, evolving cultural values have created a need for a hybrid script that merges traditional and modern values. |
