In recent decades, the reliability of the Colorado River to remain the main provider of water for the Intermountain West region has been called into question. Particularly under discussion is whether the Colorado River Compact (CRC) and Law of the River, first enacted in 1922 are still relevant governing documents. This article examines recent developments within the bounds of the compact, explores how the history has shaped the development of the Colorado River over time, examines the main issues facing the Colorado River today: climate change, urban growth, and justice, and argues for the replacement of the CRC in light of these challenges. |
