It is light, fibrous, very tough; of a paleyellow on the inside; darker coloured, rough, scaly, and warted on the outside ; has little smell, and a bitter, not disagreeable taste. It gives out its bitterness both to alcohol and water. MEDICAL USE. It has been muchcelebrated iu obstinate diarrhcea, dysentery, anorexia, indigestion, lienteria, and intermittent fevers. It is given in powder, in doses of half a drachm, or a whole drachm ; but it is too bulky, and very difficultly pulverizable. It is best exhibited in decoction. Two drachms of the bark maybe boiled in two pounds of water to one, and thedecoction drunk in cupfuls in the course of the day. PRESCRIPTIONS. R.. 1. Take of the raspings of quassia orange-peel - - - - drachms 2, - drachms 3, lemon-peel - - - - drachms 4, boiling water - - ~ ~- pound 1: Let this remain for four hours in a closed saucepan, thenstrain off. The dose is three table-spoonfuls at twelve, seven, and bed-time. A veryfine stomachic medicine. R,. 2. Take of the soft extract of quassia - drachm 1, essential oil of peppermint - drop 1: Make into twelvepills, of which take three, an hourbefore dinner. Excellent to create digestion in habits injured by hard drinking. k.. 3. Sa DESCRIPTION. Tus tises to a larg e shrub. Leaves numerous, oblong, obtuse, narrower towards the base, entire, fleshy, without foot. Stalks, very closely surrounding the upper part of the stalk. Flowers whitish, or flesh-coloured, termina ting the stemin clusters. Calyx small and toothed. Corolla round, bellied, at the margin cut into five Segments, which become reflexed. HISTORY. This is a very small evergreen shrub. The leaves are oval, not toothed, and their under surface is smooth and pale green. It grows wild in the woods, and on sand-hills in Scotland, and 2a2 |
