It is broughtto us in large irregular masses, composedof yva- rious little shining Iumps or grains, which are partlyof a whitish colour, partly reddish, and partly of a violet hue, Those masses are accounted the best which are clear, of a pale reddish colour, and variegated with a great number of elegant white tears. This drug has a strong feetid smell, somewhat like that of gar. lic; and bitter, acrid, biting taste. It loses some of its smell and strength by keeping, a circumstance to be particularlyre gardedin its exhibition. Neumann got from 1920 parts, 1350alcoholic extract, and afterwards 190 watery; and inversely, 550 watery. The smell resides entirely in an essential oil, whichrises in distillation both with alcohol and water. grains. Dissolved in aljcohol. 4, In the form of clyster, to the extent of about two drachms. PREPARATIONS. Emutsion or Gum Ammoniac. (Lac Ammoniaci. I. D.) Take of gum ammoniac, two drachms (one drachm, DD); distilled water, half a pint (pennyroyal water, eight eunces, D.): (Lac Assefetide. L. D.) In the same manner maybe made an emulsion of assafeetida, and the rest of the gumresins. The lac ammoniaci is employed for attenuating tough phlegm, and promoting expectoration in humoral asthmas, coughs, and obstructions of the viscera. It maybegiven to the quantity of two spoonfuls twice a day. It answers the same purpose as assafcetida in substance, and on some occasions is a more convenient, though a very disagreea- ble mode of exhibiting it. Tincrure or Assararipa. (Tinctura Ferula Assefetide. E. Tinctura Assefcetide. D. L.) Take of assafoetida, four ounces; Digest for seven days (six days, L.), and strain through paper. Take of assafectida, four ounces; ——— rectified spirit of wine, two pints ; ——— water, eight ounces: Addthe spirit to the assafoetida, triturated with the water, and digest for eight days; then strain. This tincture possesses the virtues of the assafcetida itself, and may be given in doses of from ten drops to fifty or sixty. Poratne Cryster. (Enema Catharticum. D.) Take of manna, one ounce Dissolve in ten ounces, by measure, of Compound decoction of chamomile; then add of Olive oil, one ounce 5 Sulphate of magnesia, half an ounce: Mix them, Farr Enema (Enema Feetidum.
