Show 2*<3fl • - DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH, EDUCATION, AND WELFARE OFFICE OF EDUCATION WASHINGTON 25, D. C. July 15, 1959 Professor A. S. Atiya The Institute for Advanced Study School of Hisi^ojlcal Studies Princeton, New Jersey Dear Professor Atiya: Not until yesterday was I fortunate enough to find a copy of your "The Crusade in the Later Middle Ages" available on the shelves of the Library of Congress. While I had a chance to read it very hurriedly a few years ago and so could fully appreciate its value for my work, this is the first time I have had a chance to really sit down and enjoy it. Needless to say I immediately signed for it, took it to my desk in the Library of Congress, and I will now probably do as you suggested, that is have it microfilmed by the Library of Congress. I greatly appreciate your very prompt answer. The thought may have occurred to you that since Jean de Brienne lived in the early 13th century and your book begins primarily in 1291, that I exaggerated its importance to me, but I assure you that I did not. It seems to me that in any historical writing one has to take full advantage of hindsight and it is almost as important to know the history of the Crusades following Brienne*s efforts as it is to be well acquainted with those which immediately preceded his day. In any event I will greatly enjoy having a copy of your book in my private library. I am greatly interested in your statement that you plan another book presumably on the Near East during the Crusade period. I will be looking forward to it and hope that I will be able to get this one before it has gone out of print. Thanking you again for your many courtesies, I am Cordially yours, James M. Buckley, Press Officer Office of Education |
