Show Z- c II* ameRican foundation foR the study of man, inc. 142 WEST 49th STREET, NEW YORK CITY OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT CIRCLE 5-5686 December 20th 1952 Dear Professor Atiya, Your very fine letter of December the 12th reached me the day before my departure. Unfortunately I am flying to East Africa first, and will not be passing through Cairo on my way over. However I will only be a few days in East Africa, then I am flying over to Oman to call on His Highness Sultan Said bin Taimur, a quick visit with the expedition in Dhofar, and then I will come to Cairo to see you. So that I should definitely be in Cairo within the next month or so. I am sorry for my delay in seeing you, however I have had so many things going on that I simply could not get away before this. We have finally reached an agreement with the Yemen Government and will be bringing our equipment and supplies out of Mareb in the near future, which is very good news. I suggest you write me c/o the American Consulate, Aden, South Arabia, and mark on the outside of the envelope, "Please hold until arrival". In that way I'll be able to get it. If not, write me at this address and Eileen will forward your letter to me as I will be keeping in close touch with her, as she will be in charge of my office here in New York while I am gone. Yesterday I had a long talk on the telephone with both Dr. Evans and Verner Clapp of the Library of Congress in Washington, and they asked me to present to you their greetings and best wishes. I suggest you send the official invitation to me c/o the American Consulate in Aden, so that I will have no difficulty with the Egyptian Authorities in the airport, for as you know, it is impossible to get a visa for Egypt from Aden. Please forgive the briefness of this note, as I am leaving immediately by air and did want to acknowledge your kind letter before my departure. Best personal wishes, and I'll be seeing you very soon, and my greetings to Professor Mitwally if and when you see him. (Letter dictated by Wendell Phillips - transcribed and typed after his departure for Arabia - signed on his behalf). j0 S. * Sincerely, WENDELL PHILLIPS |
