Show ^ityytf amepican foundation foR the study of man, inc. 142 WEST 49th STREET, NEW YORK CITY CIRCLE 5-5686 December 16, 1953 Professor Aziz S. Atiya 14 Sharia Wadi el Nil Maadi (Near Cairo) Egypt. Dear Aziz: I was very sorry to leave Egypt so hurriedly, without having the privilege of seeing you or at least talking with you over the telephone before I left. I asked Dr. Abou Zeid however to give you a full report on our last meeting, and I tried to reach you, but you were out and I decided to leave with only a few hours8 notice. Actually I feel quite encouraged about the situation in Egypt, as far as the western desert is concerned, that seems to be in the hands of Conorado and at least for the time being I don't think we should concern ourselves any further about the western desert. As far as the eastern desert and Sinai is concerned, I think that we still have a very fine opportunity here, if I can arrange matters successfully in the United States. Dr. Abou Zeid was extremely kind to me and I had a delightful luncheon at his beautiful home and we spent the afternoon discussing all of these matters in great detail. I also had a fine visit with Dr. Baghdadi who was quite frank with me about the whole situation and I believe it will be possible to satisfy Egyptian requirements with regard to the eastern desert and Sinai. Please let me hear from you in the near future, and I will be going out to California very soon for Christmas and will look into the matters which we discussed relative to the University. I am happy to report that I have just been awarded the title Young Man of the Year by the Junior Chamber of Commerce for the State of California, and so will be remaining in California a few days after New Year's for the Banquet and award. Please write me at my New York address however, as Eileen will be in charge here, and everything will reach me immediately. I do trust that your brother is now much better, please give him my best wishes and tell him I am sorry I didn't have the pleasure of seeing him, but will certainly meet him when I return to Egypt in the near future. I had a nice visit with Dr. Luther Evans in Paris on my way home, and Dr. Evans asked me to send his greetings to you, and enquired in detail about your work. OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT Best personal wishes. |
