Show 400 FACTS LEADING HISTORY MEXICAN NEW OF cisco Chaves *2° was chosen over Colonel Perea by a vote of 8,511 to 6,180, and in 1867, Charles P. Clever over Chaves, 8,891 to 8,794. The election of Clever was certified by the governor, and pro forma by the secretary, and the delegate took his seat. Secretary Heath, however, made a separate certificate stating that the election was fraudulent; this action of the secretary was endorsed by the legislative assembly, and after a long and bitter contest, Colonel Chaves was seated. In 1869 Colonel Chaves was again elected, his opponent being Don Vicente Romero, but in the following election, owing to the independent candidacy of Major José D. Sena, Colonel Chaves was defeated by J. M. Gallegos. During this campaign, which was a very bitter one, a riot occurred in the streets of Mesilla, resulting in the killing and wounding of a number of people. A meeting had been held on the 27th of August, 1871. After the meeting was over the democrats and republicans formed in two processions and marched around the town of Mesilla; coming from opposite directions the two processions met in front of the store of Reynolds and Griggs. M. 826 J. Francisco Chaves was born in Los Padillas, Bernalillo county, New Mexico, June 27, 1833. In 1841 he entered St. Louis University. His education was finished with a two years’ course in the College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City, His grandfather, Don Francisco under the republic of Mexico. and in 1852 he returned to the territory: Xavier Chaves, was governor of New Mexico His father, Don Mariano Chaves, was born December 31, 1799, and was married to Dolores Perea, the daughter of Pedro Jose Perea, a descendant of one of the early settlers of New Mexico. Don Mariano Chaves was chief of staff under Governor Manuel Armijo in the zevergtion of 1837. He was inspector general of all the military forces of chief. Subsequently, in 1840, Don Mariano was made political New Mexico. When Colonel Chaves’ father sent him to St. Louis to receive his education, he said to him: ‘“The heretics are going to over-run all this country. Go and In 1852 learn their language and come back prepared to defend your people.’’ and 1853 Colonel Chaves made overland trips to the state of California. He served as a soldier in campaigns against the Navajés prior to the Civil War. In 1861 he was commissioned major of the 1st New Mexico infantry, by 250 ident Lincoln, and was afterward promoted to a lieutenant-coloneley for gallant and meritorious services.
