Show OF NEW MEXICAN HISTORY The fact that the government at Washington, even to this day, refuses to disclose the contents of the papers filed by Don Santiago Magoffin, in which it is believed that Magoffin ‘‘itemized’’ his expenditures, lends color to the general belief that the same means which had theretofore purchased favors for the Santa Fé traders . enabled Magoffin to convince General Armijo that it was best for me him that he abandon the idea of making any defense at the Apache Pass, a point on the route to Santa Fé which might have been held by a very few men of spirit and bravery. One hundred men, fairly well armed, behind the entrenchments which Armijo had prepared, with the cannon which he had, could have successfully commanded the pass and compelled the American army to take another course in its march to Santa Fé. It was not so easy a matter, however, to compromise and conciliate some of the officers of the army, but in this the customary Hibernian wit, coupled with his known plausibility, enabled Magoffin to arrange matters with Archuleta, the second in command. Do not permit your personal interests to separate you from the common cause, and, with union, spirit and true patriotism, you may be assured the Mexican Republic will command the respect of its enemies and will demonst rate to the civilized world that she is entitled to be numbered among the free and enlightened nations of the earth! _ ‘We are fortunate in having at the head of the supreme government an illustrious, honorable and patriotic general, who in the past has sustained with dignity and energy the sacred rights of our country; one who will lead us to victory. Let us prepare ourselves for the coming conflict which has been forced upon us.
