Show i _n 3 ) ^ UNIVERSITY OF UTAH UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES Memorandum-to Dr- Cool_gZ ft^^Rashid Wu Pate 10^4-76 As per your instructions, I discussed with Dr. Atiya the projects he proposed to the Library Administration and the following are the results of our discussion. 1.- Dr. Atiya wants to publish a handlist of all our holdings in mss., including those on microfilm. This is a long-term project which cannot be finished within a year. At present, we have about 2,100 Arabic mss. We will be receiving 3,000 Persian mss. from Tehran University in the next two years. As a result, the project requires someone who knows both Arabic and Persian and Mr. Adel Allouche is such a person who has the combined knowledge of both languages. Dr. Atiya would like him to work for us twenty hours per week at four (4) dollars an hour for the remainder of the year, while he is working on his dissertation. One half hour to one hour is required for anyone to catalog a manuscript. Therefore, a total of 5>1000 mss. will need 3.500 hours. We need 2,800 dollars to cover the current academic year and a special fund should also be set aside for the next year. 2.- Dr. Atiya also wants to publish a second supplement to our Arabic Catalogue. The cost for publication was estimated by Tom Schmid at 4,000 dollars. However, as you told me, if we could do it on our 9200 xeroxing machine, the cost would be reduced substantially. As for the time to prepare for publication, it is difficult to give you an estimate; but according to Marian Sheets, the first supplement took her four years with extra help in the preparation. 3.- Dr. Atiya will select samples from our papyri for duplication and he will send them to various scholars for examination. Once he decides upon an able scholar to catalog them, he suggests that we pay him an annual salary of 25,000 to 30>000 dollars. 4.- Finally, as a note of information, the Middle East Librarians Association will again meet in Los Angeles this year from 10 to 13 of November. There will be a business meeting including implementation progress reports from various committees and task forces. There will also be an oppotunity to ask about the Union Arabic Catalog. I will plan on going to this meeting if I am allowed to do so. Form #177/10M/3-74 |
