Show New York University Graduate School of Arts and Science Department of History 19 University Place, Room 400 New York, N.Y. 10003 Telephone: (212)598-2851 January 4, 1972 Professor A. S. Atiya Center for Middle East Studies University of Utah Logan, Utah 84321 Dear Professor Atiya: I have been asked by Dr. Harris Nierman to forward to you a letter of recommendation on his behalf. It gives me great pleasure to do this for Dr. Nierman because he was an exceptional student and very diligent; moreover, he has had a number of years of teaching experience in New York. His good sense of humor and his vast knowledge of areas beyond his own specialty will endear him to both his colleagues and his students wherever his career leads him. He also learns languages readily. He currently reads, writes and speaks French and Hebrew and also reads Arabic and a host of other languages. At New York University, Dr. Nierman specialized in the medieval and modern history of the Near East, but he has also taken a number of courses in the West European area. In fact, when Mr. Nierman prepared his doctorate, he deliberately chose the subject of the Crusades which meant that he had to master both the West European and the Arabic sources of the period. Mr. Nierman suggested that I make some appraisal of his talent in organizing and teaching an area studies program. As you are probably aware, New York University currently sponsors two area programs; one for Spain and Latin America and another for the Middle East.- There is also some pressure at present to form an East European and a Chinese Center. I give you this background for this reason: Dr. Nierman has worked within the Middle East area program and has thus a model around which he might build the needs of an area program. The greatest asset Mr. Nierman can bring to your department is his tremendous energy, stamina and dedication to teaching. He will be a great asset to any department he joins; moreover, he always has the privilege of drawing upon the rich resources of New York University for any new area of development. Yours sincerely, *- "^^ )di^k____- C. Max Kortepeter Associate Professor of History M ^^^Jl jv-yA^ , CMK/jsb |
