San Miguel Project The San Miguel Project would regulate flows of the San Miguel River for irrigation, municipal and industrial use, fish and wildlife conservation, recreation, and flood control. Primary storage would be provided at the Saltado Reservoir on the San Miguel River. Part of the stored water would be released into the river for downstream uses, but the major part would be diverted at the reservoir outlet into the Norwood Canal, the first link in a chain of canals and reservoirs that would further control the water and convey it to places of use. This chain would include in successive order the Norwood Canal, Naturita Reservoir, Basin Canal, Radium Reservoir, and Paradox Canal. Existing irrigation reservoirs and distribution systems would be integrated with project works. Some lands above project facilities would be served by exchange. The project would irrigate 38,950 acres, including 26,420 acres that have no present water supply. It would provide 44,000 acre-feet of water annually for municipal and industrial uses associated with the area's mineral and forest resources. West Divide Project The West Divide Project has been planned primarily to provide water for irrigation and for municipal and industrial use in connection with development of oil shale reserves. Crystal River flows would be regulated at Placita Reservoir. Some releases of reservoir water would be made directly to the river for downstream use. Most of the releases would be diverted into the Huntsman Canal, which would supply other project canals in conveying the water westward to places of use. About 17 miles of the 133 |
