Then, beyond the Slide, the river looked as if it was boiling, due to numerous whirlpools; many of them were about ten or fifteen feet in diameter, and strong enough to suck the boat down and momentarily stop the motion of the propeller and make the motor miss. We had a little diffi-culty in that stretch. Q Did you encounter any sandbars in that stretch that gave you any trouble? A Yes not until we got fifteen or twenty miles from the junction of the rivers; I don• ft remember the exact place, but I do know one place we had considerable difficulty with sandbars. Q Do you recall the date on which you arrived at Moab? A October 13th Q 1926? A Yes. We had most trouble that mile below Moab, below the bridge, where the river comes out of the canyon, in that stretch of about a mile took us about two hours to get the boat that distance. Q Can you tell me approximately how much water your boat drew with the evinrude on it? A About a foot and a half? |
