Abstract McCraw (b. 1930) is from Hopkinsville, Kentucky. He discusses his family life. He contracted polio at approximately age six, and tells about getting sick. He was taken to a Shriners hospital in Louisville, Kentucky, about 200 miles from his home. He discusses his hospital experience, including treatments and therapies. He was discharged from the hospital in full-length braces and an arm extension. His left leg and right arm were both permanently affected. He had subsequent surgeries and hospitalizations through his twenties. Mr. McCraw was an auto mechanic and ran a successful business in the Chicago area before retiring and returning to the family home in Kentucky. He has not experienced post-polio syndrome.
