Show 22 no sand in the paddle. If they had not done that they would be liable to be stuck on a sandbar right there at the town of Moab. All of this country from the mouth of the Chinle Creek ( indicating), south of Moab, suth of Greenriver, Wyoming, and clear down to the Utah- Arizona line, is a very sparsely inhabited country. I think that Mr. Eddy will tell you that when he went down the river in 1927, he met only one settler, and he was down here ( indicating) beyond Cataract Canyon, right in this neighborhood here ( indicating on map). The country is the type of country in which it is absolutely impossible to support any population upon the soil. There was at one time down here ( indicating), in the neighborhood of Hite, Utah, some mining prospect, and they did some work in there. The Special Master: ( Interposing) Where is that? Mr. Blackmar: Hite-- I do not know whether it is shown on this map or not. It is 160 miles north of Lees Ferry. But all the mine operations upon that river down there-- the supplies and material were taken in overland from here ( indicating), at a town called Hanksville. I do not know whether that is shown on this map or not. Mr. Collins: Hanksville is about 65 miles out in here 1983 |
