Show 16 Johnson; and they proceeded north on the Colorado, with a steam paddle boat, until they got here ( indicating) in the neighborhood of Black Canyon, where they established, and so reported, that that was the head of navigation upon the Colorado River. It was very important at that time to the Government to establish its water connection if it could be established, because the Government had a fort here ( indicating) near Salt Lake City, Utah, and some other forts up in the northern country, which, if they were to be supplied at all, must necessarily be supplied by the overland trails, unless it could be brought in by water from that direction ( indicating on map). In 1869, Major Powell made the first complete exploration of the Colorado River. Major Powell is recognized as one of the leading authorities upon the Colorado River. And he started in here at Greenriver, Wyoming, with a party of men and three boats, and navigated the full length of the Green River, clear down to its mouth at the Colorado River, and as far over here ( indicating) as the mouth of the Virgin River. That was purely an exploration. It had nothing to do with travel or commerce, or anything else. It was for the purpose of exploring and reporting upon that country.
